Free Rushcliffe running sessions thanks to Healthy Futures Funding

February 10th, 2020

A running group is now offering free beginners’ sessions at locations throughout Rushcliffe, thanks to support from the Borough Council’s Healthy Futures Fund.

Notts Women Runners operate courses across Nottinghamshire and are offering the exercise opportunities in Ruddington and West Bridgford for new recruits hoping to increase their fitness levels.

The group successfully applied for the funding to send volunteers on a Leadership in Running Fitness course by England Athletics which helps Run Leaders to gain experience of how to motivate others to reach their goals.

Newly qualified leaders are now supporting run sessions for beginners across the Borough, based on the Couch to 5k programme, some of which are already fully booked.

The group’s bid highlighted the need to reach residents who may not typically have engaged in physical activity over the winter months.

The running group provide 10 to 12 week programmes for women and offer a safe, welcoming environment to increase exercise levels.

The fund is designed to help groups or activities sustain themselves financially, expand their efforts and positively impact the health and wellbeing of residents in Rushcliffe.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Deputy Leader Cllr Debbie Mason said: “This is yet another wonderful example of the Healthy Futures Fund supporting local groups to provide further opportunities for people in the Borough, following our work to support the Rushcliffe All Ears group last year.

“We are so pleased to be able to assist Notts Women Runners in branching out and providing more beginners’ sessions for those hoping to become active in our towns and villages.

“The new sessions have been exceptionally popular, and we hope more women will now find a local running group to help them improve their fitness, socialise and regularly engage with their community.”

Previously, the fund has assisted community groups in buying new equipment, hiring venues for meetings and refreshing marketing materials to help reach new members.

Run Leader Co-ordinator for Notts Women Runners Eve Savage said: “We’re thrilled to be able to offer more beginners’ running sessions, thanks to funding from the Healthy Futures Fund, it’s transformed the number of sessions we can deliver.

“They promote a friendly, supportive community for runners and it’s brilliant to be able to welcome more people to our new groups across Rushcliffe.”

Rushcliffe residents donate over 13 tonnes of food and clothes to The Friary

January 14th, 2020

Rushcliffe Borough Council and local homeless charity the Friary have praised the generosity of Rushcliffe residents who have donated an incredible record 13 tonnes of food and clothing to those in need.

Residents across the Borough donated items when they placed their bin out for collection last week (January 6-10) and the authority’s waste team busily collected the charitable gifts, many from its most needed list.

Thousands of drinks, snacks, tins of food, hats, scarves, gloves, socks, trousers, underwear and shoes will now be distributed in the coming months in the fourth year of the project with the items stored for free at Edwalton Golf Centre in containers courtesy of Concept Accommodation Ltd.

The number of donations has increased by over a tonne after a similar effort in January last year and is an increase of three tonnes on the same initiative in 2018.

Borough Council Leader Cllr Simon Robinson said: “Residents’ generosity has again been astonishing, we thank everyone who has taken the time to place items out with their bin.

“It’s not just the volume of items that everyone has so kindly given but the thought so many people have gone to and checked the most needed items list that will benefit those in need who use the Friary’s services.

“Last year our waste teams collected a phenomenal 12 tonnes so to surpass that figure this year is a real achievement and praise must also go to them, dedicating extra hours to collect so many items.”

Volunteers will soon begin sorting the items so they can be used at the charity’s centre in West Bridgford, which offers advice, health and practical support services to those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Paul Randle, vice-chairman of the Friary said: “A thank you to the exceptional generosity of the people of Rushcliffe who have come up trumps again and the work of the Borough Council.

“It raises the profile of the charity in the Borough and it’s just the most superb initiative, we couldn’t survive without the support of the community, we can’t thank them enough.”

Rushcliffe Borough Council staff also contributed to the collection efforts at their sites at Rushcliffe Arena, Rushcliffe Community Contact Centre and Eastcroft depot offices.

Anyone who missed the chance to donate with the kerbside collections can still do so at the Council’s Customer Contact Centre on Rectory Road in West Bridgford.

Free bike security marking session at Rushcliffe Arena – Saturday 18th January

January 13th, 2020

Cyclists can get their bikes securely marked with their postcode for free at a security event at Rushcliffe Arena.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Community Safety team and Nottinghamshire Police will host the session at the centre on Rugby Road in West Bridgford on Saturday 18 January from 10am to 12pm.

Security marking or registering a bike is a permanent way to mark a bike’s property and ensure it is returned to the rightful owner if it is stolen.

Bike users attending the event will receive advice on how to further protect their cycles from thieves with the use of stronger locks and how bikes should always be locked up in a public and well-lit area.

Weak locks can also be swapped for a ‘D’ lock at the event, whilst stocks last.

The session will also provide burglary prevention advice, 24 hr timers and shed locks to help residents keep their property secure this winter.
